Nordic Crochet Design

Simple Beauty

A simple shawl with an elegant edging. Not too long or pointy down the back, and broad enough over the arms to keep you warm. Wear it around your neck or over your shoulders.

Abbreviations

St = stitch Ss = slip stitsh Ch = chain Sc = single crochet Dc = double crochet Tr = treble crochet Ch-sp = chain space T-ch = tip chain 2dc-cl = 2 double crochet cluster 3dc-cl = 3 double crochet cluster [example]X3 = Work the instructions inside the [-] as many times as the number after the X.

Important information

1st dc on a row is replaced by ch3 or a faux double crochet 1st tr on a row is replaced by ch 4 or a faux treble Ch1, at the beginning of a row, does not count as a stitch.

Body

Work a magic circle (or ch6, ss in 1st ch) Leave a long tail for securing the magic circle properly.

  1. Work around magic circle: 1 tr, [3dc-cl, ch1]x3, 3dc-cl, 1 tr, put a stitch marker in the 2nd ch = t-ch / tip of shawl, turn (4 dc-cl)
  2. 1 tr, ch1, 1 dc in first stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in next ch1-sp, ch1, [1dc, ch1 around t-ch]x4 – 2nd ch = new t-ch, 1 dc in next ch1-sp, ch 1, (1dc, ch 1, 1 tr) in last st (4th ch), turn
  3. 1 dc, 2dc-cl in 1st st, ch1, *3dc-cl in next ch1-sp, ch 1* repeat from *-* until tip of shawl, (3dc-cl, ch1, 3dc-cl) around tip-ch – ch1 = new tip-ch, ch1, *3dc-cl in next ch1-sp, ch 1* repeat from *-* until end of row, (2dc-cl, 1 dc) in last st, (12 dc-cl, counting the 2dc-cl at the beginning and at the end), turn
  4. 1 tr, ch1, 1 dc in first stitch, ch 1, *1 dc in next ch1-sp, ch1* repeat from *-* until tip of shawl, [1dc, ch1 around tip-ch]x4 – 2nd ch = tip-ch, *1 dc in next ch1-sp, ch 1* repeat from *-* until end of row, (1dc, ch 1, 1 tr) in last st (4th ch), turn

Repeat row 3 and 4 until you have 53 rows in total. Increase with 8 dc-cl every 2nd row, 212 dc-cl on the last row.

Edging

  1. Ch1, 1 sc in 1st st, ch2, *1 sc in next ch1-sp, ch2* repeat from *-* until tip of shawl, (1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) around tip-ch – ch1 = tip-ch, ch2, *1 sc in next ch1-sp, ch2* repeat from *-* until end of row, 1 sc in last st, turn (213 ch2-sp)
  2. Ch1, 1 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in 1st ch2-sp, *ch5, skip 1 ch2-sp, 1 sc in next ch2-sp* repeat from *-* until end of row, 1 sc in last sc, turn (106 ch5-sp)
  3. Ch1, 1 sc in 1st sc, ch5, *1 sc in next ch5-sp, ch5* repeat from *-* until end of row, 1 sc in last sc, turn (107 ch5-sp)
